Five quick tips for a more sustainable summer

July is the month for rest, relaxation – and shorter emails!

So here are five quick tips for a more sustainable summer:

  1. Ease back the AC: air conditioning is one of the biggest loads on our power grid in summer, and we often overdo it beyond what’s needed for comfort – particularly in commercial buildings and in our vehicles.  So why not dress as lightly as you can and ease back on the AC wherever you are?
  2. When possible, use free, natural cooling at home: open windows and blinds at night for free, cool fresh air; close them during the day to keep the coolness as long as possible.
  3. Reduce trash by avoiding single-use dishes, cups and cutlery.  Take it a step further: carry a set of reusable tableware in your car, plus a reusable container for restaurant leftovers.
  4. Minimize the impact of your vacation by ‘stay-cationing’ closer to home; driving electric; and staying in accommodations that prioritize sustainability with certifications like Green Key or others.
  5. Reduce the impact of your diet by trying out vegetarian or vegan options; a simple internet search will yield tons of delicious options, even for the barbecue!
