Sustainable toothbrush options

A toothbrush might not seem like a big thing.  But consider: billions are used every day; billions are tossed out every year; and the vast majority of toothbrushes are single-use plastic and end up in landfills.

Fortunately, there are better options.  I’ve been using a bamboo toothbrush (the one pictured) for about six months, and I can say it’s not only sustainable; it’s the best toothbrush I’ve ever had.  Yes, it cost a bit more, but it’s lasted longer than one if not two plastic brushes so far, and the bristles – which are as gentle as the bristles of any toothbrush I’ve had – are still as straight as the day I bought it.  When it eventually wears out, I’ll just yank out the bristles (which unfortunately are not compostable) and toss the rest in the compost, the garden or the wood stove.

Toothbrushes with replaceable heads and toothbrushes made of recycled plastic are good options too.  Here’s a nice overview of the subject (no endorsement intended).  You can buy online, but if you’re like me, you might prefer supporting local businesses like this one
